Another Rain Shortened Race

by Lorri on June 29, 2009

Hello Nascar fans.  What is it with the weather this season?  I am so disappointed that weather has played such a role in the race so many weekends this season.  I wonder what is in store next?  Who knows but I will definitely be watching to find out!  Well its been a sad week for the entire country and the world too I guess.  Anyway I just want to express how sorry I am for the family of each person who passed away this week.  Here’s to you Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Mays, and of course, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.  Rest in peace.

Well congratulations are in order for Joey Logano who garnered his first win this weekend in the midst of another rain shortened race.  However with this win he sets a new Nascar record for youngest driver ever to win a Sprint Cup race. That is quite a distinction.   Way to go Joe Gibbs and team.   And of course Home Depot for sponsoring drivers for the last dozen or so years.  Well done and congratulations to everyone on the #20 team.

Well it has been officially announced now that the Nascar Hall of Fame will open next May 11th and the inaugural class of the hall of fame will have five members.  Those will be decided by a panel of persons affiliated with Nascar either past or present and will help elect the five members from a group of 25 finalists.  The facility now under construction in Charlotte, North Carolina, will house some unique memorabilia such as the Plymouth Belvedere that Richard Petty drove to 27 victories and the very first Nascar trophy ever awarded to a team.  Plus numerous other artifacts and memorabilia from the past 60 years since the sports inception.  That will definitely be a place I will want to visit next year when I go to Lowe’s.

Well this coming weekend we are back at home of Nascar and my home track, Daytona.  This year the race is actually on the fourth of July so this should be an interesting weekend and a fantastic race.  The weather here has been rainy somewhat but I believe they are calling for clear skies this coming weekend for the holiday.   Lets hope it holds out for the race itself.  I would hate to see another great race cut short by rain.  I am going to do a NO RAIN dance.  Hopefully it will keep the rain gods at bay for the weekend.  Keep your fingers crossed too.

Well the debate about Jeremy Mayfield and his guilt or innocence continues. However not without a cost.  Since his inability to pilot a race car and his public trial and conviction in the eyes of Nascar, he has been unable to maintain the operations related to his team.  Their main sponsor has dropped sponsorship and is refusing to honor their contract and smaller sponsors that have worked with Mayfield in the past are now also refusing to work with the driver.  Mayfield filed an injunction including a statement that he has never ever used methamphatamine as suggested by Nascar and that he immediately offered another sample for testing when accused.   However Nascar refused the offer and now Jeremy says he has lost the oppurtunity to prove the test was a false positive by their refusal to issue him another drug test.  The date for the injunction is set for July 1st which is in two days.   Stayed tuned.

Well there are only about ten races left until the slates are wiped clean and everything starts again anew.  At this point after the race at Loudon, Stewart remains a mere 69 points ahead of my man Jeff Gordon.   Jimmy Johnson, Kurt Busch, and Carl Edwards round out the top five in points.  Junior who has struggled thus far this season is still back in 19th position.  My other man Mark Martin is holding steady to 11th place in the points.  Go Mark.

Well that’s about all for now friends.  Have a great week and I will see you guys later.  Dont forget to come out to Daytona Saturday!!!   See you there Nascar fans!

Kasey and the Road Course

by Lorri on June 24, 2009

Hello Nascar friends.   Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Well I am not much of a road course fan, but if we have to deal with it, at least the scenery was nice.  I dont know what it is about the road courses, maybe its the lack of left turns that are normally seen on the weekend.  I hate when they confuse me like that.  Just kidding.  But hey, I like Kasey Kahne and the first thing I thought of was a story Genna told me about him.  I immediately smiled and started laughing to myself.  Maybe someday we can get her to relate it to you all.  It was a great little story.

Anyways congratulations to Kasey Kahne.   I have always liked him anyways and frankly the boy was due a win.  Congratulations to Richard Petty Motorsports on their first win as a newly formed organization.  You will remember that they were bought out by Gillette Evernham last season when all the consolidating and so forth was going on.  And that the once great Petty organization was now part of a team.  Well that team proved to be the winning team this past weekend so way to go Kasey and team.

Well Jeff continued his streak at Infineon, not with a win but another top ten finish.  Jeff has the most victories at Infineon, the most top five and the most top ten finishes.   Congratulations Jeff.  Not the finish I was hoping for but we will take that 9th place victory.   Speaking of Gordon, my grill should be on its way to my house now.  We should have a barbeque when it gets here.  Or maybe I can take it to Daytona next weekend and do it up there!!!   That would be fun.  Anyways thats still another week and a half away.

Well lets run down the top ten finishers at Infineon this past weekend.

Kasey Kahne          9                Budweiser         Dodge

Tony Stewart         14              Old Spice            Chevy

Marcos Ambrose   47            Little Debbie     Toyota

Jimmy Johnson      48             Lowe’s                 Chevy

Denny Hamlin           11            FedEx                  Toyota

Juan Pablo Montoya   42       Target                 Chevy

AJ Allmendinger        44          Best Buy            Dodge

Clint Bowyer                33         Cheerios              Chevy

Jeff Gordon                   24         Dupont                Chevy

Elliott Sadler                19          Stanley Tools   Dodge

After last weekend’s race at Infineon, the race for the chase is heating up.  Lots of drivers are looking to seal that last spot in the 12th position to just get into the chase.   They still have a few weeks but not many.   Tony is still leading the points race and Jeff is a mere 84 points behind him.   Johnson is third in points and Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards round out the top five contenders.

Well here is the latest on the Jeremy Mayfield suspension for drugs.   The last thing that I heard was that he going to be countersued by Nascar who said he knew the policies and rules in Nascar and that there should have been nothing left to speculation as far as what happened with Mayfield.  But as you know, anyone who is accused of something like that is going to fight to clear their name if the charges are unfounded and maybe even if they are founded.  People do some strange things.    At any rate though the latest that I have heard is that there will now be a hearing in federal court on July 1st.   The judge has added his injunction to the list of dockets for that day and if things go his way he could be racing that weekend at Daytona for the Coke 01 400.  Mayfield’s suspension took effect on May 9th and Jeremy’s team has not been at the track in the last four weeks for any kind of anything even though I am pretty sure they could race without Jeremy as a driver and as long as he has nothing to do with the team.  But my guess is they have chosen not to do that.

Well thats about all for now.  I am getting ready to go to work.   So I will try and find some fun facts and information on the next place we are racing which is New Hampshire Motor Speedway.   Alright well everyone have a great day and I will be back soon.   See you later Nascar friends.
